Considering I can’t even count on two hands the number of summer mornings I’ve spent sweating my ass off blow-drying my hair (only to have it puff up the second I step outside), I’ve officially had it up-to-freaking-here with frizz. And, sure, frizz is a year-round nightmare, but throw in sticky, 90-degree weather and you’ve got yourself a perfect storm for borderline-unbearable frustration. But just as I was about to say screw it and let my hair succumb to the humidity gods, I gave it once last fighting chance and combed through the *insanely* massive market of frizz-fighting products to find formulas that actually work.

The 3 Best Semi-Permanent Hair Colors of All Time

When it comes to coloring hair at home, there can be a lot of highs and a lot of lows—and choosing the right dye can mean the difference between a glossy, gorgeous new shade or a color that you hate and a bathtub stained black.

MORE: 12 Insanely Pretty Hair Color Ideas for Short Hair

Almost anyone who has become an expert at dyeing their own hair will tell you a semi-permanent hair color is the way to go. Semi-permanent allows for natural color changes without extensive damage or commitment beyond 28 washes. Because they don’t contain bleach or lifting agents, you can’t use semi-permanent dyes to dramatically lighten your hair—your best bet is to stay within the range of your natural hair color by two or three shades. Whether it’s your first time DIYing your hair color or you’re a seasoned at-home dyeing pro, one of these formulas is bound to be the best semi-permanent hair color for you.

Clairol Natural Instincts Hair Color

For super-gentle color that won’t compromise even fragile hair, Natural Instincts is your best bet. It’s formulated with aloe, vitamin E, and coconut oil—without ammonia. In 23 liquid shades and eight rich creme colors, there are tons of options to choose from, and it only takes 10 minutes to get the job done. Plus, the included Color Treat conditioner is so good, we wish we could buy it without the box.

L’Oréal Colorista Semi-Permanent Hair Color

L’Oréal Paris Colorista Semi Permanent Hair Color only lasts about 4-10 shampoos, but that just allows you to experiment with all their fun pastel colors. Colorista has 7 bright shades designed for light blonde/bleached hair and 4 shades with a hint of color designed for brunettes, no bleach required.

John Frieda Precision Foam Hair Color

If this is your first time coloring your hair at home, a foam dye like this one is a great choice for ease of use—there’s no dripping, it’s a cinch to apply evenly, and there’s just less to worry about. For boosting your color and keeping it looking fresher for longer, incorporate John Frieda Colour Refreshing Gloss in between regular colorings.

Even though my pre-teen self refused to step foot in public without wearing at least eight coats of Lip Smackers, the wiser, older me has grown into more of a matte lipstick fiend. I mean, not to be dramatic, but the thought of having a sticky, thick layer of gloss sit on my skin all day unnerves me to no end—a smooth, dry finish is about 100 times more appealing. But considering every beauty brand has a new lip gloss on the market right now (lookin’ at you, Glossier), I decided to throw it back to my middle school days and give the ‘90s-makeup staple another go. Spoiler alert: I’m low-key hooked and may or may not be wearing a shiny-AF gloss as I type this.

I don’t know if it’s the nostalgic aspect, or maybe the fact that my lips look hella hydrated and pretty, but I tested 10 lip glosses and liked them so much that I’m taking a break from my mattes until further notice (sorry, we can still be friends). And I’m not talking about the outdated formulas that give gloss such a bad rap, because with new, tinted lip oils from Clarins and sheer, buildable pigments from Huda Beauty, these lip glosses are anything but old-fashioned. Khloe Kardashian Just Dyed Her Hair Bronde for the Last Days of Summer

Summer may be winding down, but that hasn’t stopped Khloe Kardashian from looking absolute fiyaaaah with a new hair color. So what is it? Brown? Blonde? Actually, it’s a little bit of both. The 33-year-old is getting the best of both worlds with the prettiest bronde hair color that’s got us drooling for days.

While Khloe’s dabbled as a blonde and a brunette before, this is the most we’ve seen her tow the line between the two hair colors. Before that, the closest phases Khloe came to going bronde were the times she grew out her dark roots, added honey to her blonde, or went ombre. And Khloe isn’t the first celeb to make bronde a thing, either. In May, Gigi Hadid first peaked our attention to the hybrid hair color when she showed up to the 2017 Met Gala with dusty bronde hair.

The mastermind behind the color is celebrity hairstylist Tracey Cunningham, a favorite of Khloe’s who has also worked on the heads of stars like Emma Stone and Chrissy Teigen. Along with a new color, Khloe also seems to be sporting wavy hair extensions to add some length to the lob she got last month.

Justine Marjan, the stylist responsible for Khloe’s envy-worthy do, showed off her new look on Instagram yesterday with a paparazzi picture of Khloe holding hands with boyfriend and NBA player Tristan Thompson, while flaunting her fresh color.

Alicia Keys Just Debuted Insanely Cool Neon Braids

Despite the hellish humidity we’ve been living in for the last few months, I literally forgot it was summer this morning. Maybe it was my all-black outfit, or the heavy, cloudy downpour that trapped me on my commute, but the lack of sunshine and bright colors was giving me serious winter vibes. But as soon as I swiped open my newsfeed, I immediately snapped back into summer mode when I discovered Alicia Keys’s new, vibrant-as-hell neon braids.

Yup, Alicia Keys just got insanely colorful, really-fucking-cool braids. Over the weekend, Keys casually Instagrammed her new hair with the caption, “#views #nyc.” Set against a white t-shirt and hot-pink pants, Keys’s waist-length braids combine yellow, fuchsia, and orange for the prettiest sherbet-colored hair we’ve seen all summer.

Last year, the 36-year-old became straight-up beauty goals when she made the epic decision to stop wearing makeup. In the singer’s May 2016 Lenny Letter, she wrote, “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.” Since, Keys hasn’t been photographed wearing a single trace of product, and she continues to prove how comfortable and confident she is in her own skin—case in point: her bold hair.

In what has felt like a never-ending stream of celebrity hair changes this month, Keys isn’t the only celebrity to opt for a neon hue (what’s up Kylie Jenner and Kaley Cuoco), but I gotta say the singer’s new color is so damn pretty that I’m tempted to grab a bottle of Manic Panic and switch up my aesthetic. We’ll see if Keys holds onto the neon braids for the rest of the summer, or if she’ll pull a Bella Hadid and swap it out tomorrow. Here’s hoping for the former!

The Complicated Beauty Evolution of Miley Cyrus

Real talk: Who doesn’t love a walk down memory lane? We mean, our embarrassing as-hell high school yearbooks will forever be off limits, but we can’t deny the joy in digging through the major hair and makeup moments of celebrities who’ve been in the public eye since birth. And if anyone’s been in the spotlight for 10-plus years, it’s without a doubt Miley Cyrus. But unlike Zendaya or Emma Watson, Cyrus’s beauty evolution hasn’t exactly been an endless stream of on-point looks.

MORE: Lily Collins Calls Out Sizing Standards in the Fashion Industry

Sure, Cyrus made her debut as really-freaking-cute Disney Channel star. But in her misguided attempt to graduate from her squeaky-clean, Hannah Montana-image, she went through a problematic, three-year phase of cultural appropriation: She practically twerked her way through much of 2013, used black women as props in her music videos and live performances, and even wore dreadlocks to the 2015 MTV Movie Awards—and she has a massive span of red-carpet photos to show it.

Photo: Getty Images

Fast-forward to 2017, and the 24-year-old has officially ditched the cornrows for a wholesome, all-American façade, just in time for another album drop that’s decidedly (and conveniently) less wannabe-Missy Elliot and more, well, “American Idol”-pop. She’d told E! News last year that she was ready to connect with her audience “in a deeper way,” which we’ll assume means in the absence of illegal psychedelics. And in a July interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Cyrus explained, “[Acting erratically] became something that was expected of me. I didn’t want to show up to photo shoots and be the girl who would get my tits out and stick out my tongue.” She added: “Like, people will say, ‘You’ve changed.’ And that’s supposed to be derogatory. But you are supposed to change all the time.”

We get it: People grow and change constantly, but what’s missing from Cyrus’s interview is an acknowledgement of stealing and using another culture for profit, only to label it as a phase. And while Cyrus’s white privilege will allow her to move on—another problem in itself—not all of America has such a short-term memory. Put simply by an outraged Twitter user, “Miley Cyrus moving away from hip-hop is a nice example [of] cultural appropriation… black culture is used when it’s convenient.”

Whatever side of the fence you’re on, Cyrus’s beauty evolution has been a tricky one—see it all, ahead.

Selena Gomez turned 25 on Saturday, and while her birthday included a low-key celebration with pajamas and an at-home party, one place the newly turned 25-year-old didn’t skimp out on was her hair. While we’ve grown a liking to the super-tousled lob the actress has been sporting since January, there’s still a hole in our hearts for the long, dark brown locks we fell in love with in Gomez’s Disney days.

Well, it seems like the “Fetish” singer has answered our prayers and gone back to her roots—for now. On her birthday and likely her birthday only, Gomez ditched her lob for boob-length, beach-babe hair extensions that’s got us drooling for days. The former Disney Channel star debuted the extra-tousled do in a couple birthday pics where she lounged on her kitchen island as she was surrounded by blue and white balloons and two birthday cakes. (Naturally.)

“Thank you for all of my bday love. I couldn’t be more blessed. A lot of you don’t realize how much you mean to me. I. Love. You. –think 25 is going to be epic. xo,” she captioned one of the shots.

Here’s Exactly What Happens When You Get Your Legs Waxed

$

I think it was Don Draper (or Balzac) who said, “our worst fears lie in anticipation,” and when it comes to getting a leg wax, those words couldn’t ring truer. Yes, the thought of having hot wax slathered all over your skin—and then getting all your hair ripped out by the root sounds scary AF—but it’s really not that bad. And when you know what to expect for that first appointment, it totally takes the edge off.

Truth be told, I was pretty nervous for my first time. There’s no sense in saying it doesn’t hurt, but honestly, it’s totally bearable. Plus, anything that makes shaving in the shower a distant memory is okay in my book. What’s it like getting your legs waxed for the first time? Read on.

Even though it’s your first time, it’s certainly not theirs

Whomever is waxing your legs has done this so many times they’ve lost count. Relax and know that you’re in good hands (assuming you’ve booked an appointment at a reputable place).

MORE: Why Underarm Waxing Will Change Your Life

Don’t move

Especially if you’re getting hard wax, you can’t move once it’s applied otherwise the wax won’t dry properly to take remove the hair. Be prepared for a few strange positions that will likely make you feel like you need to squirm, but consider this fair warning that you need to remain still.

Turn your head and cough

At one point, you’ll switch from laying on your stomach to laying on your back. When you’re on your back, it’ll be easier to turn and cough, which is a trick to feel less pain. You’ll exert breath and distract yourself from pain at the same time, so if you can remember to turn your head and cough, you’re golden. If your waxer doesn’t suggest it first, give him or her a head’s up so they’re not thrown off by you coughing the entire time.

Keep breathing

This may be the hardest thing to remember in the moment, but I can’t tell you enough to just keep breathing. Our muscles tense up and clench when we’re anticipating pain, but the second you let go of your breath and relax, everything gets better.

Be prepared to be up-sold

In the same way that your hairstylist will try to sell you shampoo and conditioner from the salon, your waxer will try to sell you serum, oil, pre-wax and post-wax spray, so just be prepared for that.

MORE: Khloé Kardashian Got Her First Wax in Sixth Grade

No hot water for 24 hours

Go for lukewarm water instead of hot, which will actually help your skin in the long run anyway because hot water can dry it out. Stay away from baths, hot tubs, and scorching hot showers to avoid serious skin irritation.

Your legs won’t be baby smooth at first

I was expecting to walk out of the salon with legs smoother than anything, but that wasn’t really the case. Considering shaving has been the hair removal method for more than a decade, the hair is conditioned for that and needs to be trained differently. It’s a process, and after a few times, your hair growth cycle changes.

Not shaving is the best thing ever

If you can afford to wax your legs every four weeks, it is absolutely glorious because you never have to shave them. You save time, nicks, and frustration you would’ve otherwise spent with a bottle of shaving cream and a razor. It’s amazing, and it’s perfect when skirt season is right around the corner.

Using Texturizing Spray on My Wet Hair Gave Me Perfect Beach Waves

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: My hair sucks. I mean, after I mask it, wash it, blot it, heat-proof it, blow-dry it, straighten it, curl it, spray it, Powder Play it, and then tousle it with no fewer than three products, it’s fine. Good, even. But anything short of that, and it’s a limp, thin, probably-greasy mess that looks blah. And if I dare skip Powder Play—my absolutely favorite volumizing product ever—my hair mostly just lays there, flat against my head.

MORE: Gorgeous Summer Hairstyles That Hide Frizzy Hair

But this isn’t about my love for Powder Play—not this time, anyway. This is about the new trick I taught myself one awful morning while in a zombie-like stupor after spending the night tending to my one-year-old nephew who thought crying every half hour on the half hour was a joint idea of a good time. (Side note: Every single new-ish parent deserves an award just for showing up to work.)

In any case, I got myself up and showered, and in my haste/Twilight Zone-like daze, I sprayed my texturizing spray—you know, the step that usually comes after your hair’s dry—on my damp hair. I immediately sulked: My morning was already shot, so could stringy, piece-y hair really make it that much worse? But when I was done blow-drying my hair, it was already perfectly beachy in that I-just-got-out-of-the-ocean-and-it-totally-dried-like-this way, no additional product cocktailing needed.

texturizing spray on wet hair trick

Photo: Imaxtree

Honestly, I chalked it up to some higher power—it must have known that a bad hair day would just sink me into a depression at that point—so it blessed me with gorgeous, tousled, easy beach waves. So I tested it again the next morning when I was better-rested, and yep, it was true. A little spritz of texturizing spray—I vacillate between Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and IGK Beach Club Texture Spray—on towel-dried hair lends itself to a texturized-but-not-crunchy vibe that can be hard to get if it’s your last step. Three weeks later, it still works like a charm, and I’ve tested it with a few shampoo/conditioner combos since: It seems my hair takes to it best when I use Sachajuan Ocean Mist Shampoo with Grown Alchemist Volumizing Conditioner or Kristen Ess’s Signature Conditioner.

And if you’re really committed to the beachy look—hey, it is summer—skip the round brush and rough-dry it with just your fingers. Finish with a little cream or oil on the ends for some dimension (I like Sachajuan Finish Cream or Ouai Hair Oil). Good hair days ahead, people.

Yes, You Need Glycolic Acid in Your Face Wash

We can invest in all the foundation, highlighters and contouring products that we want—but the truth is, if we don’t have a solid base to start from, our favorite makeup can’t do its thing. When it comes to getting glowy (but not oily), flake-free, youthful skin, glycolic acid is where it is at—and incorporating it into your routine is a easy as washing your face.

Here’s everything you need to know about this skin essential—as well as our guide to finding the right GA product for you.

What is glycolic acid?

Glycolic acid is the smallest molecule in the alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) family—and due to its small size, it penetrates the skin cells easier. As an AHA, glycolic acid naturally exfoliates the skin by removing dead skin cells and allows new, radiant skin cells to grow in place. It’s also an important anti-aging ingredient, as it’s been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also great for those prone to excess oil, as it cleanses and exfoliates without stripping the skin.

MORE: The 9 Best Korean Skin Care Products to Buy at Target Right Now

How does it work?

Though it can be found in facial cleansers, peels, and creams, a glycolic facial cleanser is the best way to sneak this ingredient into your daily beauty routine—you wash your face every day, after all, so it’s more likely you’ll get reliable results from this ingredient. Plus, since you don’t leave cleanser on your skin for a long period of time, you won’t experience any of the major side-effects of glycolic acid—redness, soreness, peeling—that a GA-rich serum or peel would potentially leave you with. The quick and easy application of a glycolic acid face wash will leave your skin feeling brand new.

Garnier’s Cult-Favorite Micellar Cleansing Water Is Allegedly Contaminated with Bacteria

Update: 4:45 p.m: Garnier has issued a statement: “This post on Reddit is an isolated report–we have not received any other similar reports from consumers using the Garnier Micellar All-in-One Waterproof cleanser (with the blue cap).  We are trying to get in touch with the person who posted the thread to learn more, as consumer safety is our absolute priority.  We did see the Reddit post referenced reviews on our Garnier website about solid particles appearing in our regular All-in-One cleanser (with the pink cap).  This is a result of an ingredient (which is part of the formula) that solidified in the micellar water and does not impact the product’s effectiveness or present any health risk to someone using it. We have already corrected this in our manufacturing process.”

Originally posted 12:30 p.m: Fact: Any beauty obsessive has a can’t-live-without, desert-island product. For me, it’s a super-pigmented, matte lipstick, but for many (including a few of my fellow editors) it’s Garnier’s Micellar Cleansing Water. Deemed the lazy-girl way to remove makeup, cleanse skin, and tone, Garnier’s hero product has become the ultimate, cult-favorite staple—and at $8.99 a pop, it’s a major drugstore steal. But according to a recent viral thread on Reddit’s Skincare Addiction, consumers have noticed a, well, disturbing issue with the formula: The water is allegedly growing bacteria, which has resulted in broken out and irritated skin for some.

MORE: Using Texturizing Spray on My Wet Hair Gave Me Perfect Beach Waves

Yup, sorry for spoiling your lunch, but an outraged (see: heartbroken) Micellar Cleansing Water user just took to Reddit to share their horrifying experience. The user started, “Just a warning to you all, something is going on with some bottles of Garnier Micellar Water. I have used two bottles of this stuff without a problem, and I considered it my [holy grail] cleanser. Then, something weird as fuck started growing in my third bottle (which I got from Ulta), and it kept getting bigger and bigger.”

Garniers Cult Favorite Micellar Cleansing Water Is Allegedly Contaminated with Bacteria

Photo: Garnier

The user shared an insane photo of their bottle, which appears to have thick, white globs of the alleged bacteria or fungus floating in the water—and later, the user began to experience out-of-character breakouts and irritation. “For a while I didn’t realize [the water] was setting my skin on fire and breaking me out in tiny little red and white bumps all over my cheeks in localized clusters, giving me random red patches, and making everything I put on my skin sting like hell.” Of course, the user didn’t send their bottle to a lab for testing, so at this point, whether it’s bacteria, mold, or something else entirely is all pure speculation.

Still, like anyone would, the user assumed it was a faulty bottle and promptly threw it away. But after a few weeks of using a new bottle (this time, from Walmart), the cloudy particles appeared again—along with the user’s red and irritated skin. They concluded: “Please, if you’re using this product, check it and if it isn’t CLEAR when settled, be careful.”

Obviously, the community of self-labeled skin-care addicts had a shit-ton to say. Most consumers responded with caution, like one user who commented, “Oh god, that’s horrifying and disgusting, especially so because I actually have a bottle on my self and have been using it constantly. I just peered at mine, and while it looks perfectly clear right now, I’m going to be incredibly cautious and double check before using it in the future.” Others were concerned by the product’s lack of security seal. As one user put it: “One thing I have always thought is weird about this product (in addition to this issue) is that there’s no safety seal on it when you first open it.”

Interesting enough, a common idea suggested throughout the thread was that the alleged bacteria could have been infiltrating the water via cotton pads. The original poster responded, “I considered that bacteria may be getting introduced into it through the cotton, but the bottle cap is not the kind of cap you can really dip a cotton pad into… Regardless, I think if normal use can cause it to grow bacteria in a few weeks, then something is wrong with the preservative system.”

We reached out to Garnier team for comment, but did not receive a response by press time. We’ll update this story as soon as we hear back.

12 Best Contour Palettes for Almost Every Skin Tone

The only thing more annoying than getting lost while watching crazy-long contouring tutorials on YouTube is realizing you bought the wrong damn shade after spending half an hour in the cosmetics aisle. Eyeballing each shade in-store might’ve worked once or twice, but any beauty junkie knows that the world isn’t at peace until you’ve realized you screwed up your purchase after you take it out of the packaging, leaving you with a contour that’s way too muddy—or worse, an unflattering shade of brownish-gray.

MORE: The Absolute 9 Best Facial Moisturizers for Every Skin Type

Before you swear off contouring for the rest of your life, consider a couple of important points from makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes: If you’re fair-skinned, a taupe shade is usually a safe bet to avoid a look that’s too dirty or too orange. If you have medium skin, you can opt for warmer shades, but make sure you don’t accidentally pick up bronzer: “Bronzer just gives your face an overall natural glow, and contour creates shadows on the face,” Hughes said. “If something looks like it has a red hue, it’s definitely a bronzer.” And, if you have darker skin, you want to look for a deep brown shade that, again, will create a shadowy look, rather than blend into the skin.

Now that that’s settled, it’s time to actually find a palette that fits the bill. Ahead, we gathered the best contour palettes out there for fair, medium, dark, and deep skin that can accommodate a range of tones, so if you have medium skin that’s on the more olive side, or dark skin that’s a little lighter, you won’t be left searching. Kate Hudson Just Shaved Her Entire Head into a Major Buzz Cut

Let’s admit it. With all the faux bangs, hair extensions, and pixie wigs going around, we’ve become hair cynics when it comes to celebrity hair changes. So when someone like Kate Hudson shaved her entire head of golden-blonde locks into a badass buzzcut, red flags immediately go up. Is the 38-year-old’s hair hiding underneath a super-duper tight wig cap? Is this the work of some hair CGI magician? Well, turns out that Hudson’s buzzcut is the real deal and we’re just as shook as you are.

Fans first caught a glimpse of the actress’s new do on Tuesday as she was shooting a scene for a secret project with Sia. Not much is known about Hudson’s role other than it was juicy enough for her to shave her envy-worthy locks, and that the project also includes Sia’s frequent muse, Maddie Ziegler. Along with the buzzcut, Hudson also seemed to have dyed her hair and eyebrows dark brown, a departure from her natural ashy blonde.

In the world of celeb bodies, there’s no doubt about the fact that the Hadids have got it going on. And though they’ve definitely been blessed with some fantastic genes, that doesn’t mean they don’t work to keep themselves in shape—and Bella Hadid will be the first to admit that she doesn’t mess around when it comes to diet and fitness.

“I’ve been eating hard protein every day, and working out for three hours every day,” she told People last fall, around the time she was preparing for her first Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.

Three hours a day?! Hadid obviously sticks to a serious workout schedule, and is careful about what she eats. “I think that if you just stick to something you can really achieve so much,” she says. “It’s crazy but I think that you know if you set your mind to something I think you can succeed.”

Hadid likes to work out with Rob Piela at Gotham Gym in NYC, and she likes to do so alone. “I literally can’t work out with anybody,” she said. “It has to be me and him. If I am working with other people, I freak out.” Hadid calls Piela “really the best,” and credits him for her serious gym body.

For the most part, Hadid sticks to a high-protein, clean diet, even while she’s traveling (which is much of the time). “I like to eat healthy and not eat crazy plane food,” she said. “I like to still make sure my diet is good and I stay hydrated and stuff. That’s basically all I do.”

But that’s not to say she doesn’t think people should indulge every now and again. “If you want to have a piece of bread, go have a piece of bread,” she says.

And even though Hadid puts in work and pretty much looks flawless, even she has insecurities.

“I think every single person in the world has insecurities,” she said. “It’s crazy because I think that when other people look at all of the VS models or all of the girls [who] are walking, they’re like, ‘They’re not human. They don’t have any insecurities.’ But I think every single girl [who’s] going to be walking probably has an insecurity.”
